After spending time with SparkyLinux 9 "Tiamat" (2026.06) in a VirtualBox environment, I can confidently say this distribution deserves more attention than it typically receives. Built on top of Debian Testing "Forky" with a rolling release model, Sparky manages to offer the best of both worlds: the vast, reliable Debian ecosystem combined with consistently up-to-date software.
Installation and First Impressions
The installation process was one of the smoothest I have experienced on a Linux distribution. The Calamares 3.4.2 installer guided me through each step clearly, with no unexpected errors or confusing prompts. From powering on the live environment to having a fully functional desktop took under 15 minutes — impressive for a distribution of this depth.
Performance
Running under VirtualBox with 2 virtual CPUs and approximately 4 GB of RAM, SparkyLinux handled everyday tasks without breaking a sweat. Memory usage at idle hovered around 1.79 GB, which is reasonable given the full KDE Plasma 6.5 desktop. The Linux 7.0.13 kernel provided solid hardware recognition, and the system felt genuinely responsive throughout the evaluation — no lag, no stuttering, even when opening multiple applications simultaneously.
Desktop Experience
KDE Plasma 6.5 is where SparkyLinux truly shines. The desktop is visually refined, with the Breeze theme giving it a clean and professional appearance. The level of customization available is exceptional — from panel layouts to window decorations — making it suitable for users who want their environment to feel truly personal. Konsole, the default terminal, is feature-rich and comfortable to work in daily.
Package Management
APT remains one of the most reliable package managers in the Linux world, and having access to both Debian Testing and Sparky's own repositories means software availability is rarely an issue. That said, I noticed that some classic tools like neofetch are no longer available in the Forky repositories, requiring users to switch to alternatives like fastfetch. This is a minor inconvenience but worth noting for users coming from older Debian-based systems.
Weaknesses
The rolling release nature of the distribution, while a strength for keeping software current, may introduce occasional instability — an inherent trade-off with any Debian Testing base. Additionally, newer Linux users may find the lack of hand-holding outside the installer somewhat steep, as Sparky assumes a basic familiarity with Linux concepts.

SparkyLinux 2026.06 is a well-crafted, thoughtfully maintained distribution that earns its place among the top Debian-based options available today. This is a very good linux, everything is working.SparkyLinux is undeniably fast, and it performs exceptionally well. It delivers a snappy, responsive experience that makes your hardware feel incredibly efficient, whether you are running it as a live system or as a permanent installation.I really like SparkyLinux and everything it has to offer. The performance is consistently impressive, and it just works exactly the way a modern Linux distribution should. When I started with Sparky Linux, I did not know it would be the longest time I use a linux system without distro-hopping. I think sparky is good in 4 distinct ways :
1- stable : since I am using sparky 8 and it is based on debian 13 , stability goes without saying.
2- a touch of user friendliness. sparky has its own tools to update the system and to install software. They just work and thats what matters the most. I like about the software manager that it brings software as deb packages that are not ordinarily found in other debian systems as debs. That makes me avoid using flatpakcs, I have nothing agains flatpacks but they are so huge in size.
3- They satisfy all desktops tastes. In their software center you can choose among many desktops and not all distros give you this range of choices.
4-it consumes relatively fewer resources.
No distro is perfect and that is the case for sparky 8 there some final touches that could make the already user friendly distro even more friendlier. However, It is now 8 month of sparky and I have not noticed any thing out of order , any trouble . It works they way it should.
