Void

Last Update: 2026-07-13 14:45 UTC

Void is an independently-developed, general-purpose operating system based on the monolithic Linux kernel. It features a hybrid binary/source package management system which allows users to quickly install, update and remove software, or to build software directly from sources with the help of the XBPS source packages collection. Other features of the distribution include support for Raspberry Pi single-board computers (both armv6 and armv7), rolling-release development model with daily updates, and native init system called "runit".

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I am amazed. Blown away, even.

I have a 12 year old junk laptop that has struggled to do nearly anything on the windows that it came with, it has struggled on the likes of Lubuntu and even Puppy Linux.

After doing a lot of research on my next distro for my soon-to-be big upgrade laptop, I found Void and was highly interested by its elegant design philosophy and clean package management.

But there's a problem - I'm not very experienced with getting tits deep into minimal rolling distros, or even Linux in general. So I thought I would try it out and just see if I could even install the dang thing and try using it.

After one evening of trial and error, I managed to install Void with multiple partitions, thanks to the deceptively intuitive installer and great documentation. Not only that, but after updating my packages and installing a few more, I fell in love. It is fast. It is a joy. And for the first time in its lifetime, this crapbook laptop can actually play YouTube videos at 1080 without stuttering.

It boots in seconds, it has a beautifully designed system with runit and xbps. I think I've found my distro for life.

Does it have every package in the official repos? No, but that won't stop you from building practically anything with user manifests, and if you can't be bothered for that... There's always flatpaks.

I don't need to be a long time user to know that this is the one for me.
It's not hard, it's just elegant and simple, it leaves everything up to you.
Wow, void team! Kudos!

I have 2 systems running on my HP250G5 i3 2.00Ghz 8MB RAM 2017. First is my 'ROCK SOLID' UltraMarine Btrfs Linux which I love and secondly is the 'Void Linux XFCE' which I just installed the past day.

The speed of Void Linux is unprecedented when installed. Took 20secs, including my password, to boot in! That's fast for my laptop, I'm gonna have to disable my login password to see how really fast it is. Clicking on both Nemo & Thunar was instantaneous. Fire-Fox took 1 second. I was disappointed however that the Void repository is limited. So I suppose one is going to end up with a mix of atom & flatpak. Reinstalling a corrupt application > sudo xbps-install -f {package-name}, is very fast!

Yes there is a lot of tweaking to be done, but once done, it should work fine.

Will I ever leave UltraMarine?? "No way, Jose"!

Its like Granite! I instantly powered off my laptop whilst still in Virt-Manager trying out 'Void KDE', not once but 4 times, and UltraMarine booted in smoothly without a glitch evrytime. That's enough proof to show me its ROCK SOLID.

I love the speed of VOID Linux but I love the solidness of the ULTRAMARINE Btrfs system. Between the two, I prefer UltraMarine, because it is far more polished and easier to maintain. I raved over Big Linux, but it proved totally incompatible with any other btrfs systems and failed booting not once but twice I had system failure. AlmaLinux used Kparted, and refused to install Gparted! So I moved to over to Ultramarine, same system, but improved, which will install gparted. Enjoy Void! Enjoy UltraMarine!

I have been using Void Linux for a little over a year now, switched to it from Fedora, and I can confidently say I have found my new home. The setup was a breeze, void-installer is great. xbps, although hard to type at first, is amazing and blazingly fast. xbps-src and xtools are nice to have. runit (the main attraction for many) is simple, gets the job done, and stays out of the way. musl/glibc choice is rare and appreciated by the community. The "rolling stable release" mindset is beautiful. Many in the GNU/Linux community believe that there cannot be an in-between, you either have to use packages from ancient times or you have to spend hours every day maintaining your system (and losing your sanity) because an update just bricked your PC. Meanwhile, in the Void world, you get the best of the both worlds. Your system remains in a working, stable state and gets the latest packages.
